Hawaiian falsetto singer Leokāne Pryor proudly announces the release of his long-awaited second CD, Home Malanai. Collaborating with many talented friends, this exciting new CD presents a collection of original songs as well as traditional mele from Old Hawai‘i. Leokāne’s impressive vocal range, with his exquisite Hawaiian falsetto and tranquil baritone ballads, caresses the listener – like the Malanai breeze of his paradise home in Hāna, Maui.
With the songs of Home Malanai, Leokāne chronicles his love and rediscovery of Hawaiian music from his birth and childhood in O‘ahu’s mystical Mānoa Valley, through many years of schooling and life in the Bay Area of California, to his eventual return to his native Hawai‘i. Fond memories of childhood visits to his family’s ranch in Kīpahulu near Hāna, Maui brought Leokāne back many years later to rediscover Hāna with his friends and family. Leokāne purchased a property in 2001 which he named Malanai for the gentle easterly breezes which caress this area of Hāna. After a visit in 2003, Leokāne decided to make Hāna his permanent home. Known as “the last Hawaiian place,” Hāna is truly one of the few areas of Hawai‘i where the “spirit of aloha” continues to exist through its pristine beauty and rich Hawaiian culture. “This CD is the completion of my long journey back to what I love; Hawai‘i, the pristine land, its people, its culture and most especially its music”, says Leokāne. The title track, phonetically pronounced in Hawaiian “Homay Malaneye,” tells the story of Malanai- his home in Hāna, where he shares his life playing with friends, his family and two rascally dogs, Ua and Kimo.
The CD features eight original songs including compositions by Suzanne Case- Director of the Nature Conservancy of the Pacific, songwriter Kirk Livingston of San Francisco, esteemed Hawaiian language expert and educator Kaliko Trapp, and the notable Kumu Hula, performer and Hawaiian cultural specialist Charles Ka‘upu (composer of the title track Home Malanai). Leokāne partnered with these composers to co-write many of the songs.
Also featured are the beautiful vocals of Puna Keli‘iho‘omalu of Kaimū, Hawai‘i and Hāna’s own CJ “Boom” Helekahi and Lee-Ann Ka‘ohelani Paman. Leokāne is also joined by many talented musicians, including Danny Rodriguez, Mike Velasquez and Erik Rader of California, Jamie Lawrence of Kīhei, and Hanohano Yung and Boise Kawaiaea of Hāna.
First released in 2000, Maunahele combines Leokāne’s colorful vocal background, beautiful arrangements and angelic falsetto voice to capture the beauty and magic of a Mānoa rainbow, where Leokāne was born and raised.
With classics like Puamana, Kīpahulu, Pōhakuloa, Leinani,‘Ainahau and Ku‘u Pua i Paoakalani, we invite you to experience the breadth, depth and sincerity of this young man’s falsetto talent. His own originals Ehukai and the title track Maunahele received well-deserved attention. Maunahele also features the beautiful vocals of Puna Keli‘iho‘omalu (son of legendary G-Girl) of Kalapana.
Accompanied by his performance group Pōhai Kealoha, Leokāne has gained great popularity delighting audiences with his angelic falsetto vocals throughout the West Coast and Hawai‘i. Maunahele has received wide radio play in Hawai‘i, the mainland and abroad. This is a CD that all listeners of Hawaiian falsetto music will want to have in their collection!
